A flat, familiar paved outing with Paula on the bike, perfect for shaking out the Angel Island half‑marathon fatigue.
After back‑to‑back half marathons on the steep, technical trails and hills of Angel Island, I needed something simple: flat, paved, and familiar. So for run #30 of my 52@52 challenge, I went back to a classic – Coyote Creek in San Jose, with Paula riding alongside me on the bike. The southern reach of the Coyote Creek Trail is a long, almost completely flat paved path that follows the creek and skirts parks and open spaces, which makes it perfect for an easy reset run.

There was nothing heroic about the pace or distance this time, and that was exactly the point. My legs still carried some fatigue from the Angel Island climbs, so I treated this outing as active recovery: relaxed cadence, steady breathing, and plenty of time just chatting with Paula while she pedaled next to me. The paved surface and gentle profile of the trail meant I could switch my brain off from “trail‑survival mode” and simply enjoy moving forward along the water.

Running somewhere so familiar reminded me how important these “maintenance” outings are inside a big challenge like 52@52. Not every run needs to be epic or scenic to matter; sometimes the wins are a smooth stride, no pressure on pace, and good company on a safe, predictable route. I finished feeling lighter, not drained – exactly what I needed to be ready for the more adventurous runs waiting ahead.
