Run #10: Creekside Sun and Born to Run

Run #10 added another solid chapter to the 52@52 journey: a sunny winter day on a beautiful paved trail, great company, a key chapter of Born to Run, and more practice with the Altras.

Back on the Los Gatos Creek Trail

This run was again along the Los Gatos Creek Trail, starting at the Los Gatos Creek Trailhead (Pruneyard) in Campbell, going south through Vasona Park into Los Gatos, and then back.

  • Fully paved, mostly flat, with good shade and views of the creek, small ponds near the Campbell–Los Gatos stretch, and the Vasona Reservoir.
  • Temperature between 13–15°C (55–59°F), sunny but comfortable.
  • Gear: long-sleeve shirt and neck shade under the hat, avoiding sunscreen on face and neck.

Bike support and no 360° camera

My beloved wife did the route on her bike again, just like last time on this trail.

  • She rode alongside me the whole way, took photos and videos, and basically handled all “documentation duties” since I did not bring the 360° camera this time.

Born to Run at the perfect moment

Today’s audio was “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall.

  • The run ended right as Chapter 31 finished, the long chapter that describes the Ultra Maratón Caballo Blanco, when the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) race against top American ultrarunners in Mexico’s Copper Canyons.
  • Now there is only one chapter left in this excellent book, which is highly recommended to anyone who runs or is thinking about starting.

Altra Rivera 3, cadence, and a movie detail

Once again, I ran in the Altra Rivera 3, keeping the focus on what the book suggests.

  • Main goals: land with my feet under my body and increase cadence, not speed.
  • Anyway, my right knee started hurting again after 10 miles. At mile 12 I have to stop to do some stretching before finishing the run.
  • After the run, I discovered that Fitbit does not show cadence from the Pixel Watch 4 recording, which was disappointing.
  • Since I did not wear the Garmin Venu 2S, there was no way to check cadence in Garmin Connect later, so that analysis will have to wait for a future run with the Garmin back on the wrist.
  • By the way, did anyone notice that in the movie One Battle After Another, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character wears Altra running shoes? He is in the Altra Lone Peak trail model with an orange sole that gets visibly dirty during filming, a choice influenced by his preference for a wide toe box for comfort, as mentioned by the film’s costume designer.
